The long-term effects of COVID-19, commonly referred to as post-COVID syndrome, remain a challenge for both patients and healthcare providers. While acute infections can now be reliably diagnosed and treated, post-COVID symptoms vary widely and are often difficult to distinguish from other conditions. This creates a pressing need for innovative care solutions that reduce the burden on affected individuals while enhancing diagnostics and treatment planning.
To address this, a research network led by University Hospital Jena is developing a mobile application designed to monitor symptoms, well-being, and physiological data of post-COVID patients. Supported by a €3 million grant from the German Federal Ministry of Health, the project, known as REMIT (Remote Monitoring and Intervention for Optimized Care for Post- and Long COVID Syndrome), aims to leverage wearable technology and AI-driven insights to improve patient care.
How the Post-COVID App Works
The app collects and analyzes data from smartphones and wearable fitness trackers, measuring key health indicators such as:
- Cardiovascular function
- Sleep patterns
- Movement behavior
- Self-reported symptoms and well-being
This data is securely transmitted to the IT systems of treating physicians, providing a more comprehensive picture of a patient’s condition. With the help of machine learning algorithms, the system identifies patterns characteristic of post-COVID syndrome, supporting differential diagnosis and predicting disease progression.
Empowering Patients with Personalized Health Insights
Beyond aiding doctors, the app also provides real-time, personalized feedback to users. Patients receive tailored insights and health-promoting recommendations, such as breathing exercises, mindfulness techniques, and lifestyle adjustments. By integrating digital monitoring with therapeutic guidance, the solution empowers individuals to take a proactive role in their recovery.
